Every two years, SCTS Engineering students design, fabricate, and race a human powered submarine in the International Human Powered Submarine Race (ISR). With the shortage of welders, pipe fitters and other high-demand workers likely to get worse as more of them reach retirement age, unions, construction contractors and other businesses are trying to figure out how to attract more young people to those fields.
Article Highlights Shortage of Skilled Trade Workers
A recent news article drew attention to the growing shortage of skilled trade workers in the United States and the growing opportunities for young people interested in careers in the trades. The article, from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, describes how many older trade workers are approaching retirement and fewer younger people are set to take their place.
Despite Recession, Demand for Skilled Labor Is High
For these hard-to-fill jobs, there seems to be a common denominator. Employers are looking for people who have acquired an exacting skill, first through education — often just high school vocational training — and then by honing it on the job.
'Soulcraft' Honors An Honest Day's Work : NPR
Matthew Crawford was on what most people would think was the "right track." Then he left his job as executive director at a think tank in Washington to open a motorcycle repair shop. In his new book, Shop Class as Soulcraft, he makes the case that our society has placed too great a value on white-collar work and not enough value on the trades.
